The CP-102UF is a 2-port serial card with a fiber optic interface that is designed for industrial automation applications requiring a long distance, multi-point, PC-based data acquisition solution. Each port supports up to 921.6 Kbps transmission. The Universal PCI interface supports both 3.3V and 5V PCI buses for installation in nearly any PC server. All popular operating systems are supported.
Serial transmission is typically limited to 15 meters for RS-232 or 1.2 km for RS-485. The CP-102UF makes it possible to transmit serial signals up to 40 km (using single-mode fiber). Using optical fiber also provides another benefit for many industrial applications: it isolates the data from dangerous increases in ground potential, ground loops, and electrical EMI/RFI electromagnetic radiation. Ring Operation
The CP-102UF can be used with Moxa's TCF-142 serial-to-fiber converter to connect serial devices and PCs in a fiber ring. Once the ring has been set up, simply use the DIP switches to configure the CP-102UF to "Ring mode." When one node transmits a signal, the signal travels around the ring until it returns back to the transmitting unit, which then blocks the signals. With the CP-102UF, you can set up fiber rings that are up to 100 km in total length.
