Our Obstruction Free slide door is is the best solution when you have an opening that cannot be obstructed by any track either above or beneath the opening.

General Electric Case Study: John Lummiss , maintenance manager for the 100 plus acre GE Energy facility in Peterborough, oversees facility maintenance, safety and machine repair. John has purchased 25 industrial guarding systems from 360 Guarding since 2006. In 2007, as a part of GE's ongoing continuous improvement initiatives, a bobbin winder was identified as one machine where both productivity and safety improvements were required.

360 Guarding Challenge: Safeguard an 18 foot opening, with no overhead obstruction

John presented 360 Guarding with a unique challenge: Design and fabricate a safety barrier to cover an 18' opening with no room for swinging doors and allow access for a crane to load and unload.

360 Guarding Solution: Providing the customer a custom solution

John contacted Darren Reid, one of the 360 Guarding Sales Representatives, to come out for a site visit. With 25 guarding systems installed, John states that 360 Guarding has many strengths, "they are readily available, they show up ready with a tape measure… they are knowledgeable of their own product, as well as challenges encountered at manufacturing sites."

Darren took the necessary measurements and proposed a solution, a Double Hung Obstruction Free Slide Door (i.e. no track above or below). This allowed the necessary 18' opening, to be guarded when required, yet compressed to a 6' by 1.5' footprint when access was needed, thus leaving no obstructions for the crane. An engineering drawing was created by 360 Guarding and forwarded to GE for review by their maintenance and production team. 360 Guarding firmly believes it is important for all stakeholders to have input at the design stage. The system was signed off and then fabricated and set up in house. This allowed representatives from GE to review, buy-off, and test the complete physical system, prior to shipping.

360 Guarding Result: Guarding that works like it should

Once the guarding was shipped and installed, John received positive feedback from his maintenance crew on the guarding, noting that it was easy to assemble. Operators have also commented that it is easy to use. John recognizes that 360 Guarding consistently works with their customers to ensure their needs are met, from the quality of the product, to establishing a delivery date that fits into the timeline of a particular project. The Double Hung Obstruction Free Slide door was such a success for GE that they went on to order a variation of the same door for another bobbin winder in a different area of the plant.
