Historically electrolytic series-parallel capacitor banks have been used in this application, but with limitations. The maximum working voltage across an electrolytic capacitor is 500 V, and current is limited by high ESR at high frequency. Electrolytic capacitors have a relatively high energy density which allows for a compact package.
Aerovox manufactures DC Link capacitors with high energy density, ultra-low inductance, and are capable of handling very high currents at frequencies greater than 1000 Hz. All of these products are manufactured at our facility in New Bedford, MA and typically are available with short lead times.
Considerations for using an Aerovox film capacitor versus electrolytic banks:
· More current per capacitance (A/µF) reduces the total capacitance required.
· One capacitor replaces a bank which requires additional labor and components
· Has the ability to withstand up to 2x rated voltage in overvoltage conditions
· Film capacitors are non-polar, eliminating the need for expensive components
