The ALSTOM portfolio of wear-resistant products includes upgrades for pulverizers, fuel delivery systems, pressure parts and ash handling systems.

Now ALSTOM proudly adds Xwin products to its wear-resistant offerings for pulverizers.

Developed by Magotteaux, a leader in the technology of grinding processes and wear mechanisms, Xwin products are available for applications in virtually all models of ALSTOM coal pulverizers.

Xwin® technology represents a new approach to reducing wear in high abrasion conditions.

Xwin Technology

Xwin technology combines the extreme wear resistance of ceramic with the mechanical properties of cast alloys.

The Xwin material is a metal matrix composite (MMC) whereby ceramic particles are embedded and reinforced with steel or high chromium alloy.

The ceramic particles are evenly distributed in a unique "honeycomb" design that is exposed as the Xwin grinding roll and grinding segment wear.

When compared to traditional mono-metallic components, Xwin® products are designed for:

  • Reduced wear
  • Increased traction
  • Increased resistance to breakage

Hardness Comparison

The almost too obvious key to designing wear-resistant products is to employ materials that are much harder than the material being ground.

Quartz, the hardest particles in raw materials and the primary constituent for determining abrasiveness, has a hardness of 1800 - 1900 on the Vickers Hardness Scale.

The metal matrix composite of the Xwin products provides a layer of protection having a hardness of 2100 Vickers. This compares with a hardness 900 Vickers for high chromium and hard-facing carbides, the industry standard for hard-surfacing products.

Operational Experience

A number of utility power plants in the United States and Canada have experienced similar increases in wear life of their pulverizer components. Life hours and wear have been proven to increase up to three-times longer than the average components using chrome carbide overlaid grinding rolls and hi-chrome grinding segments.
