Selenium rectifiers are seldom specified, designed, or used today. They were among the earliest of semiconductor rectifiers. Even earlier than germanium diodes! Selenium comes from the Greek word for blue, selene. They give off a garlic like smell when they are overstressed and they are toxic.

Selenium rectifiers have been in use for over 60 years and are still used on old railway systems and early heavy metal fabrication equipment. Selenium rectifiers are usually made by depositing or plating a selenium semiconductor compound on a steel plate. The manufacturing is slow,and expensive.Also the selenium rectifier is large and bulky. It is mechanically oriented and also suffers from a high leakage current, a low frequency response, and relatively short lifetime. If that isn't bad enough, it has a garlic like smell when overstressed. Although AMS can supply many old and discontinued selenium rectifiers we recommend using a silicon diode, usually matched with a resistor, as a "green solution" for a longer lasting, higher reliability, smaller replacement. AMS will do the redesign for you.

American Microsemiconductor can supply selenium rectifiers, but we prefer to replace them with silicon rectifiers.
