The rectifier circuit of SCR has a low forward resistance and high reverse resistance. It is controlled from an OFF state to the ON state by a signal applied to he gate. Once it is turned on it remains ON even after removal of gate signal as long as minimum holding current Ih is maintained in the rectifier circuit.
Obviously, the SCR can also be switched on by exceeding the anode to cathode breakover voltage. A large rate of rise of circuit voltage can also trigger SCR into conduction. Most SCR applications are in power switching, phase control, chopper, and inverter circuits.
