Introduction to Zener Diode

The forward characteristic of the zener diode is the same as for a general purpose diode, but when a reverse voltage less than the zener voltage is applied there is a small leakage current, essentially constant, up to the breakdown or zener voltage. The current at this point then rises dramatically but the breakdown or zener voltage remains essentially constant.

Parameters for theof zener diode

The basic parameters of a zener diode are:

  • Obviously, the zener voltage of zener diode must be specified. The most common range of zener voltage is 3.3 volts to 75 volts; however voltages higher than 75 volts are also available from AMS (AMS supplies zener diodes up to 200 volts)!
  • A tolerance for the specified zener voltage is necessary. While the most popular tolerances of zener diodes are 5%, 10%, and 20%, more precision tolerances of zener diodes typically 3%, 2%,1% and 1/2% are also available from AMS. A test current ( Iz ) for the zener voltage, must be specified and for the required tolerance.
  • The power handling capability must be specified for the zener diode. Popular power ranges in zener diodes are: 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 Watts. The low power devices are axial and surface mount while the high power devices are generally Stud Mounted.
