Integrated Optical Proximity Sensors

Proximity sensing in mobile phones turns off the LCD backlight (power saving) when answering a call and the phone is near to the ear.

Avago's APDS-9120 is an integrated proximity sensor that combines built-in signal conditioning and space-saving packaging technology. Its very thin surface mount package (1.1.mm height) and good detection range is coupled with signal conditioning circuitry that allows it to work well under sunlight.
