Looking for engineered plastics that can bring your latest LED Application to life? Don't bother wishing upon a star. Instead, put your trust in Bayer MaterialScience, a leading LED materials supplier. Bayer has designed grades of its proven polycarbonate resins specifically for demanding, high-brightness LED applications just like yours.

No matter where you need your light to shine, LED technology is bringing brighter, more life-like lighting to commercial, industrial and residential applications.

The average LED lifecycle of 50,000 hours means low maintenance and replacement costs. In addition, LEDs' minimal heat generation translates to less unwanted heating of interior space, reducing air conditioning loads. Add in LEDs' low energy consumption and you have the perfect recipe for saving in an environmentally responsible way.

Plastics for the People

Durable? Translucent? Reflective?

We have a materials solution for every LED application.

Bayer MaterialScience's portfolio of LED grades is specifically engineered to offer you a variety of in-demand properties for LED lighting, including:

  • Higher Light Transmission
  • Glass-like transparency
  • High impact strength
  • Excellent dimensional stability
  • Improved luminous flux
  • High thermal stability
  • Flame resistance
  • Good lighting source hiding power
  • High reflectance

But that's not all

Bayer MaterialScience also offers UV-stabilized grades and special color shades for traffic signals, other colored lighting applications and infrared-transparent or infrared-blocking technology.

Opportunity Knocks

Bayer MaterialScience's LED grades are ideal for:

  • Primary/secondary optics
  • Lenses/covers
  • Globes
  • Housing and enclosures
  • Reflectors
  • Thin-wall applications

Lenses and Secondary Optics

Makrolon® LED2245, LED2045 and 2247 polycarbonate resins provide higher light transmission, improved luminous flux and high thermal stability versus general purpose polycarbonate. They exhibit high purity and cleanliness for high-heat and high-impact applications.

Thin-wall Applications

Bayblend® FR410 polycarbonate blend resin has a higher flame rating at thinner wall thicknesses, and is designed to perform exceptionally well in thin-wall applications requiring high impact resistance and excellent UL flame ratings.

This material contains no fillers or chlorinated or brominated flame retardants, yet offers good chemical and hydrolysis resistance.

Metal Insert Molding

Metal insert molding, where simple metal shapes are inserted into a mold and plastic is molded around them to add functionality and aesthetics, is becoming a popular production technique. Makroblend® UT5205 polycarbonate/ polyester blend was specially formulated for these types of applications, as it stands up to the stresses associated with differential expansion rates, uneven heating/cooling, chemicals and moisture. Makroblend UT5205 can aid in overall part reduction, component functionality, weight savings, and overall design freedom.

Illuminating Ideas

Reflect on This

Bayer MaterialScience's Makrolon and Bayblend materials for highly reflective surfaces can exhibit up to 95% reflectivity. This translates into big benefits:

Molded-in reflectors can streamline luminaire design and production, making it possible to consolidate the assembly and reflector into one component. But that's just the beginning. Our reflective materials also help manufacturers avoid the time, expense and environmental side effects associated with secondary processing—such as aluminum or chrome plating or painting—of the reflective surface.

Reflectivity can also be adjusted to create a "glowing" effect, letting a fixed level of light pass through the part while reflecting the majority of the light.

A Clear Day on the Way

Makrolon FR7087, a revolutionary new grade from Bayer MaterialScience, is the first clear thermoplastic material to meet UL 94 5VA at 3.0mm thickness.

This unique flame-retardant resin also has good clarity with typical light transmittance approaching 90% and low haze levels of ~1%. Makrolon FR7087 also maintains excellent physical properties expected of polycarbonate, with typical multi-axial impact levels of 48 ft. lb.

This is the ideal material for live-current applications where transparency is critical. It also allows designers the freedom to break free from the limitations of glass.

Eco-Glow

It's easy to see why LEDs are becoming the shining stars of the lighting industry: they conserve energy, reduce CO2 emissions and are completely mercury free. The precise directional focus of LEDs lets you put light exactly where you need it—not where you don't—which also helps reduce light pollution.

Bayer MaterialScience has taken the sustainability of LEDs a step further with the development of its Bayblend FR610 GR and FR630 GR resins that contain 10%and 30% post-consumer recycled content, respectively.

These grades can be used in housings and other lighting components, and have properties typical of flame-rated PC/ABS, including UL 94 V0 at 1.5mm; 5VA at 3.0mm.

Bayer MaterialScience has also taken the leap into bio-content resins. Two bio-content resins are currently available: Makroblend BC400 and BC250 with 40% and 25% bio content, respectively. These general purpose bio-content Makroblend materials offer a unique level of toughness, stiffness and physical properties in a more sustainable package.
