BioAmber has built a strong patent portfolio covering the use of succinate salts, and in particular potassium succinate, as deicing and anti-icing solutions. Extensive testing has shown that potassium and sodium succinate have a far better corrosion profile than potassium acetate, potassium formate or brine, the current standards, with equal performance and less ecological impact.
Potassium and sodium succinate represent a new generation of deicing solutions that dramatically reduce the corrosion of steel, alloys and concrete, without negatively impacting the environment. The fact that our succinate solutions are renewable, and that they consume large quantities of CO2 in their production, is an added benefit.
Equally important, our potassium succinate solutions have a cost comparable to potassium acetate, and unlike acetic acid, are not subject to fluctuations in the price of oil. Our succinate based deicing solutions have several potential markets:
Runway De-icing
BioAmber has partnered with Basic Solutions in the field of runway deicing solutions. Basic Solutions recently launched a new runway deicer that they branded Gen 3. It is composed of potassium acetate and their proprietary corrosion inhibitor package under exclusive license from Batelle (PNNL). Basic Solutions plans to roll out a new generation of runway deicer next winter, branded Gen 4, which will combine BioAmber's potassium succinate and Basic Solution's corrosion inhibitor package.
Non-Runway De-icing / Anti-icing
BioAmber is seeking distributors in the markets of anti-icing (bridge and overpasses, parking lots), deicing (roads, driveways, walkways) and wetting agents for rock salt. The data we have generated shows that potassium succinate is far superior to potassium acetate in terms of corrosion, without any negative impact on efficacy or the environment. When a small amount of potassium succinate is added to NaCl (2% by weight), there is a 65% reduction in steel corrosion. Succinate salts represent a new generation of economical, eco-friendly deicing / anti-icing solutions with excellent cost and performance.
