Chemical Industry Application:

A BioTector TOC Success with Salt Samples

  • On-line time >99% since installation in april 1997, in a high salt application
  • Proven low running costs with minimal spare parts usage
  • Proven long calibration intervals

Requirement

The wastewater from the DursbanĀ® Plant of the Dow Chemical Company Ltd. (UK), has a high salt content which typically ranges from 1% to 5%. A TOC analyser was required that would work continuously while analysing water with a high salt concentration. After a short trial period, a BioTector 970 was permanently installed and has been in operation since April 1997.

The BioTector Solution
The BioTector 970 pioneers the Advanced Oxidation Method. Hydroxyl radicals are used to oxidize the organic material in the wastewater and any salt residues are flushed from the analyser at the end of each reaction cycle. Thus, there is no build up of salt crystals in the BioTector reaction chamber.
The BioTector readings are not affected by the presence of salts in the samples. Tests have shown that the BioTector can operate even with salt concentration of greater than 20%.
The successful operation of the BioTector has allowed Dow Chemicals to optimise the operation of their final effluent treatment system. Over just a short period, savings, which resulted from this optimisation, has already paid for the installation of the BioTector.

Additional Applications:

  • Chemical Industry:
    • Shell Pernis - BioTector selected by Shell ending a six year search for a reliable on-line TOC analyzer
    • High Turbidity - A BioTector TOC application with high turbidity effluent

Over 500 TSAO-enabled units have been installed worldwide; many of which are operating in applications that would have been impossible with conventional technologies, including:

• Dairy processing plants - where the effluents are high in fats, sugar and protein.
• Chemical plants - where the process streams are high in salt and contain volatile organics.
• Refineries - where wastewaters contain oil, calcium and salts.
• Municipal treatment plants - where wastewaters have high turbidity and particulates.
• Airports - where the surface water contains extremely high Organic loads, de-icing chemicals, particulates and salts.
• Pulp and paper industries - where wastewater contain fibrous materials and particulates.
• Pharmaceutical industries – where the waste streams contain a wide variety of chemicals
