Planetary Design

CaterpillarĀ® planetary transmissions, designed and developed 40 years ago, have been continuously updated into efficient, reliable and durable units. Planetary gear sets maximize reduction within minimum space and provide for on-the-go full power speed shifts. The large stationary clutch packs are hydraulically actuated and spring disengaged. All of the planetary shafts and all of the transmission bearings are pressure lubed for efficient operation and long life. Positive gear lubrication is provided by pressure sprays, splash, and submersion.

Clutch Design

Caterpillar uses a unique patented F-37 friction material where high-energy clutch discs are required. This special high-energy material was developed by Caterpillar to withstand high temperature and to resist wear for extended transmission life. All F-37 clutch packs are continuously oil-cooled and lubricated with SAE 30-weight transmission drivetrain oil, which meets Caterpillar TO-4 specifications.

Gear Design

Caterpillar designs and manufactures the gears used in Caterpillar transmissions. Gears are performance and endurance tested for reduced noise and durability. The heat treatment and finish grinding meet or exceed specifications for the highest level of quality required for all applications.

Bearing Design

Caterpillar purchases mostly anti-friction bearings and has established a close working relationship with all major bearing suppliers. In addition to a supplier's line of quality bearings, Caterpillar often uses these suppliers to design unique bearings for special applications. These special bearings are a major reason Caterpillar can offer heavy-duty transmissions to meet the toughest challenges in any application.

Controls Design

Transmission shift controls are electric-over-hydraulic. Standard controls are 12V DC with a common ground. The solenoids can be enclosed in the transmission case away from moisture, dust, and potential damage. The mechanical/hydraulic logic in the differential spools, springs and orifices ensure smooth shifts and proper load sharing by the planetary clutches. All shifts are hydraulically modulated to reduce driveline shock loads and increase powertrain life.

Case Design

The pump suction oil port is protected by magnets and a fine mesh metal screen just above the oil level in the sump. This allows for environmentally friendly inspection, cleaning, and servicing without loss of transmission oil. Speed sensor locations are provided for inputs to electronic controllers, auto shift, or integrated powertrain systems. The cast iron and fabricated cases are designed for heavy-duty, rugged off-highway usage.
