Li-Ion / Li-Polymer cells continue to be the first choice in pack options because of the high capacity and longer operating time capabilities when compared to NiMH and NiCd batteries of the same size. To properly charge battery assemblies using this cell technology. Utilization of a Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer battery charger from Cell-Con in a 1.3A, 2.3A, or 4A version is recommended.

Each Cell-Con Lithium ion battery charger utilizes a constant current, constant voltage charge algorithm. Final termination for this charge process occurs when the charge current falls below a minimum current threshold (current detection) or by the expiration of a timer. Safety and reliability are the foremost concerns of all Cell-Con products.

NiMH Battery Charger/NiCd Battery Charger

When fast charging Nickel based battery packs, a charge control is required within the NiMH battery charger to properly charge the batteries. Relative voltage control using the -dV principle has proven to be a very reliable cut-off method.

This termination technique is based on the fact that there is a slight drop in voltage in NiMH / NiCd batteries when they are fully charged, provided they are being charged with DC current. The NiMH battery charger senses the voltage reduction when the battery voltage has reached a certain level in relation to the maximum recorded value. In the event that this does not occur, the charger has a built in safety timer which interrupts the charging after a set period of time and prevents the batteries from overheating.

There is a tendency for the voltage of some batteries to drop during the first stage of the charging cycle. This applies in particular to batteries which have gone for a long time without being charged. Therefore, NiMH battery chargers have a start timer which prevents -dV sensing during the first few minutes of the charging cycle. The NiMH cells have a lesser drop in voltage than NiCd cells, however, most battery manufacturers recommend the same -dV sensing for both NiMH and NiCd batteries. When charging NiMH batteries, it is recommended that temperature sensing termination be used in addition to -dV sensing (the pack must have a thermistor included in its assembly.

These standard fast chargers use -dV detection by default. Because the chargers are equipped with a computer programmable microprocessor, they can be readily programmed by Cell-Con to fit a variety of Nickel Metal Hydride specifications. These charge detections include (one or more options can be combined):

Cell-Con provides a safe and effective Lead Acid battery charger solution for charging SLA batteries using a 3 step charge algorithm. In the first phase, the charger will fill the battery to 80-90% capacity. Once at this level, the charger goes into the second phase to fill the remaining 10-20% of capacity until a low level current is detected or a timer expires (depending upon the specific model). The third and final phase reduces the charge current to a safe level where the battery can be left attached to the charger indefinately.

Unlike traditional 'taper' chargers, Cell-Con Lead Acid battery chargers utilize a constant current level in the first mode. When the battery voltage rises to the maximum cycle voltage during charging, the chargers do not immediately change to float mode. Instead, the charger will look for a low level current (current detection) or the expiration of time to terminate constant voltage mode. When the constant voltage mode begins, the battery is already charged to 80-90% of full capacity and can be used at this point if desired. Allowing phase two to conclude ensures that the battery will receive the remaining 10-20% capacity.

Once the low level current is detected, or the timer expires, the constant voltage level of theLead Acid battery charger is reduced to a safe value (going into float mode) where the battery can be left on indefinately without risk of overcharge.

Multi Position Battery Chargers



Multiple battery packs can be independently charged, simultaneously, by utilizing one of the multi-position charging solutions offered by Cell-Con. Depending on specific design criteria, a charger will be provided from our stocked, semi-custom, or fully custom product offerings. The product descriptions below provide a brief explanation of each design type, and will assist with the selection of the appropriate product.

Stocked Chargers

Standard, stocked chargers can be easily and effectively configured to create a multi position charging station. By using standard 35mm DIN rail, the appropriate mounting bracket, and mounting bracket clips, any number of battery chargers can be located in the same central location for charging multiple battery packs.

All components for these chargers are stocked, permitting shipment within 24 hours.

Semi-Custom Chargers

Use of Cell-Con's proprietary universal battery charger module (UBC) provides the ability to have up to 6 charging positions in a standard enclosure. Each position on the standard UBC is programmed for use with Li-ion / Li-polymer, NiMH / NiCd, or Lead Acid batteries. Additionally- all charging parameters are tailored for proper charging of the specific battery pack.

Lead time for a 'semi-custom' solution is typically within a few weeks.

Custom Chargers

When a 'stocked' or 'semi-custom' option does not meet the requirements of a multi position application, fully customized solutions can be developed. Once the charging specifications and form factor requirements are identified, a custom charger will be provided to meet the defined criteria with minimal lead lime.
