86mm Super-sized NEMA 34 (3.38 inch) stepper motor and integrated controller produces tremendous torque, speed, and versatility. No wires between the motor and controller--simplest solution for motion control of large actuators, CNC, and machines.

New stronger controller with 100 amp power drivers run smoother and faster, and is perhaps the most powerful in the industry. The 86mm series have an extra large front ball bearing, for higher load bearing capacity. These controllers can also be the main controller for your machine or device, possibly eliminating all other electronics. Several operating modes and the 5 input pins give you easy automation by connecting switches or external control signals.

They include a DB15 connector, power filter assembly and 24 inch jacketed power cable. Just add one of our AC/DC 24 volt 80 watt encapsulated power supplies for a complete system.

You will need one RS232-TTL adaptor (on Accessories page} for set-up using your PC or PLC, thereafter the adaptor is optional. All Excitron controllers have TTL (+5v logic) on all pins, including the serial TTL USART. The RS232-TTL adaptor translates the RS232 +-10v to TTL +5 v logic.

Options:

  • 1 inch manual knob on rear shaft.
  • Knob with once per revolution index.
  • Optical encoder with 2 quadrature outputs and 1 index, 800 ppr.
  • Rear shaft extension, included with any encoder/knob option.

Features:

  • Incredibly simple--instant stepping right out of the box--no programming needed.
  • Easily set motor speed parameters with simple one-letter commands via TTL UART.
  • Controller and motor are optimized for highest motor performance.
  • All motors in this series are rated very high torque and speed compared to competitor's same size 42 motor.
  • Powerful current limiting up to 100A.
  • Power supply voltage range from 10 to 30 volts.
  • Highest efficiency--consumes less than 14ma.
  • Pre-programmed with 24 motion profiles which you can easily modify.
  • Three manual switches included for convenient jogging and quick motion.
  • Torque values are rated torque, you may operate with more or less.

The 100A-TTL-86-156 ratings per winding (two windings per motor) is 10 amps, .45 ohms, 2.2 mH. The motor coil voltage is 4.1 volts, our controller is a DC/DC pulse-width-modulated current controller that takes the 24 vDC and converts it to 4.1 vDC. The rated wattage is 36.5 watts. The motor wires can withstand 300 volts. A switching regulated power supply at 24 vDC needs to supply 3.1 amps to produce the 20 amps going into the motor.

These ratings are based on running continuously, and reaching a temperature of around 170 degF. If your application is intermittent, then the amperage can be increased. Only temperature is the limiting factor.

The 86mm series have an extra large front ball bearing, to take more loads then others in this NEMA size 34.

Our controllers run "right out of the box" by typing a 'w' then 'G'. Each Excitron controller includes all the electronics and drivers for running the stepper motor. There are no separate electronic boxes and no messy cables. Included here is a full range of details of our motor/controller family.

You easily control how your stepper motor operates in these modes:

  • Serial Command Mode: send and receive via RS232, TTL (+5v logic), or USB are either optional or built-in. Connection with PCs, PLCs or Labview work well.
  • Standalone Motion Profile Mode: repeatedly run a sequence of motion profiles, exactly as you wish, upon powerup. In this case, your computer is not needed. You can use inputs to control how and when these profiles run.
  • Input Profile Mode: each of up to 5 input pins trigger 3 motion profiles each, giving you random selection of motion by simply pushing buttons.
  • Manual Onboard switches: each built-in switch runs 1 or 2 motion profiles.
  • Driver (CNC step/dir) Mode: motor steps each time when an external STEP occurs, in the direction set by DIRECTION. CNC programs usually output these signals on a PC parallel port.
  • Encoder: encoder and/or Index input signals can be counted by the Controller, and you can enable or disable various encoder functions such as stopping if a blockage occurs.

You can combine many of these modes, with few restrictions. Hundreds of successful customers have created very ingenious motion using these simple "building blocks", some in as little as 10 minutes.

You can easily setup the Excitron controller for standalone (Motion Profile) mode so that it performs exactly as you wish upon powerup. In this case, your computer is not needed. The Excitron controller has many useful modes for inputs and for the one output, so that you can add intelligent repetitive motion to almost any device. Connection with PLCs or Labview work well.

You also need to purchase an RS232 adaptor for each controller, unless:

  • After setup, each motor/controller runs standalone (no external PC).
  • You connect multiple units in our Simple Serial Bus configuration.
  • You order the 4A-RS232 or 10A-RS232 controllers, which have built-in RS232 interfaces.

The RS232 adaptor is needed for changing parameters such as acceleration, SPS, and torque. Once setup for running in Motion Profile standalone mode, Input Profile Mode, or Driver mode (step/dir), the RS232 adaptor is no longer needed.
