Dual Rack and Pinion Rotary Drive Exhibits High Load Capacity and Resistance to Backlash

Festo Corporation has added the DRQD rotary drive with dual rack and pinion actuation as a highly capable component of its recently introduced Handling and Assembly Technology system. The DRQD lists compact design and high load ratings among its most innovative characteristics. Its efficient design allows for maximum performance within the smallest possible package (for a dual rack and pinion rotary drive). DRQD units are available to support 90°, 180° and 360° maximum rotation, with drive cylinder bore sizes measuring 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm. All of the units can operate with pressures up to 10 bar.

Both pneumatically powered gear racks are driven in different directions simultaneously when in operation, which results in the elimination of backlash at ends of rotation, since one of the racks contacts the end stop, while the other engages the pinion during periods when air pressure is applied. The integration of a buffer sleeve and end stop into a single component provides constant cushioning throughout the pinion shaft's rotation adjustment range (+6° to -20°) per side. Self-adjusting hydraulic shock absorbers with adjustable end position are available for cushioning in applications where large masses or high speeds are involved. End position sensing is accomplished with electronic sensors that neatly mount flush within slots machined into the aluminum housing.

An air "though-feed" feature provides a means to supply air to tooling mounted to the rotating pinion shaft. This option facilitates the implementation of grippers or other devices operated by pneumatic technology.

Bearing load capacity of the DRQD series is ideal for applications where the CG changes as a result of robotic wrist or compound theta axis motion, or on-the-fly movements, where inertial conditions cause axial and radial force transfers. Competitive models with similar load capability exhibit drastic differences between their radial and axial maximums.

The DRQD rounds-out Festo's rotary actuator product range for the popular Handling and Assembly Technology (HAT), while offering the benefits inherent in linear to rotary actuation devices, such as freedom from backlash, high accuracy and repeatability, extreme torsional rigidity and high torque capability in a compact package.
