Peristaltic Pumps

Operating Principle:

Peristaltic pumps operate on a positive displacement principle. Positive displacement of the fluid is created by two rotating rollers progressively squeezing an elastomeric tube against the pump housing. As the roller moves past a point in the tube, the tubing expands to allow more fluid into the pump. There is always one roller in contact with the tubing therefore no valves are required for prevention of backflow.

Peristaltic pumps are ideal for slurries and abrasive, viscous and corrosive fluids, because only the tubing is in contact with the solution. These pumps are virtually maintenance free since there are few moving parts and the only part fluid comes in contact with is the inside of the tubing. No tools or disassembly are required to replace the tubing.

Does this pump produce a constant flow?

No, the flow from the pump pulsates.

How does the speed of the motor affect the performance of the pump? Are there any drawbacks?

By increasing the rotational speed of the motor on the pump, the flow rate is increased. Yes, by increasing the speed, the tube life will decrease. Also, when pumping heavier liquids, it is good practice to keep the pump speed as low as possible.

Is this pump self-priming?

Yes, it is self-priming to approximately 20 feet of water.

Can the flow rate of the pump be varied?

Since the motor speed directly affects flow rate, adjusting the motor speed is a means of adjusting flow rate. On AC models, the motor speed can not be varied. On DC models, the input voltage can be adjusted to vary the speed of the motor.
