Long life and low maintenance were what a quality-conscious provider of insulation products needed in a gearmotor to power a commercial grade insulation blower. Dust and other environmental contaminants were highly likely to get into the motor and could potentially cause premature motor failure.
The OEM's requirements were:
• 1500 hour life requirement
• Low maintenance
• Reliable, cost-effective solution
• Minimal weight
The solution to this challenge was:
• Parallel shaft AC gearmotor
• Small package with redesigned gears for higher peak torque
• Hardened shaft for increased peak torque
• Light weight - only 12 lbs.
• Custom gearbox mounting hole pattern
Based on the power source, low stall torque considerations, and low maintenance requirement, an AC motor was selected to power the blower. The lower stall torque is important to prevent the motor from damaging the gearbox when the blower's hopper is heavily loaded on start up.
The lower starting torque characteristic of an AC motor is a benefit in this case. The in-line output and continuous duty requirements of the application indicated use of a parallel shaft gear box.
Testing and recalculating of the peak output torque requirements suggested adjustments to the gearbox to increase peak torque. Two rounds of prototyping and testing provided a gearmotor that would do the job.
