The moving slide is lightweight and allows for high accelerations with limited impact to the system. Air-bearing designs do not have the acceleration limitations of their mechanical counterparts where balls and rollers can slide instead of roll at high accelerations. The granite base is a thermally stable platform that is manufactured to precise tolerances and produces extremely flat and straight motion.
