Most programmers of vision systems resort to the use of make shift set-ups, using steel angles with magnets (which are not recommended with kinematic probing), secured flat bars or angles (which allow for part movement) or the aforementioned clay (messy and not repeatable) to station and pre-align the part or parts to be measured. This method is not repeatable and certainly not indicative of an experienced professional. CMM Dynamics recognizes this; the industry simply has nothing to offer in a universal fixture allocator for vision systems. Most designed and manufactured fixtures are very expensive and usually dedicated to one part. This being said, I would expect a precision fixture to be held coincident to the machine coordinates and in the same position upon multiple program executions.
CMM Dynamics designed and patented a precision universal fixture (VISION SLIDE®) that will reform the industry in its methodologies of fixture set-up allocation on vision systems. No more unreliable silly putty or fixtures that fail a GR&R due to mobile allocation. A well designed fixture that is not secure or repeat positioned at the least, will not pass a Gage R&R, it's a fact.
The function and purpose of the Vision Slide®
This system is used for locating a part or fixtured part(s) on a CMM (coordinate measuring machine), CNC (computer numeric control) or Multi-Sensor Vision system (Optics-Laser-Probe). These machines are used for manual and/or automatic dimensional measurement.
Currently, without this apparatus, the operator of the automatic dimensional measurement machine places a part on the table for measurement using clay or another means of holding the part as to locate or fix and when necessary repeat this with random consecutive parts to ensure Repeatability and Reproducibility of the fixture (Gage R&R), Machine Hardware itself (Volumetric accuracy), Process capability, Tool Change frequency, 1st Article (PPAP) or developmental prototypes.
The Vision Slide® ensures that the part is secure against the working surfaces by the use of shielded concentrated earth magnets, locating the part precisely and repeatable on the machines staging surface. This precise origin point can be almost globally located on the staging surface, depending on the optimal position desired for accommodating the part or parts to be measured. There is an adjustable slide scale in both the X and Y axis. By changing the position of the slide scales in either axis the operator or programmer can choose multiple coordinate positions, such as, A through G in the Y-axis and 1 through 9 in the X-axis.
When a programmer writes a program, the instructions will indicate where to set these scales before loading the part to be inspected. The operator puts the slide scales in the proper instructed position and loads the part on the staging table. Start the program and the machine will locate the part. For a quick manual check without the use of a program, place the part or fixtured part into the Vision Slide® and the part is secure and square, being held optimally for measurement.
