LOW-COST, HIGH-PRECISION SYSTEM MEASURES PROXIMITY TO 12 MICROINCHES

Proximity measuring system that offers low cost with outstanding precision. Kaman's KD-2440 measures static resolution to 12 micro inches without contacting the target. The system is easy to calibrate and features 10 kHz frequency response for both the analog and switched outputs, <1% switching hysteresis, and unique compact and rugged electronics and sensors.

The KD-2440 system makes precision static and dynamic measurements of metal targets, and thickness measurements of nonconductive material backed by metal. The opto-isolated switched output makes the KD-2440 ideal for interfacing to PLC inputs, counters, timers or alarm circuits. The gain is adjustable for up to 22 volts output with 24 Vdc input. The sensors are rated for continuous operation up to 400°F (205°C).

Kaman's new system may be used in a variety of applications using target materials such as steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. Good sensitivity to small diameter targets lends itself to applications such as gear teeth counting or RPM measurement. For example, its switching output will track RPM measurements to 10 kHz.

Kaman's KD-2440 system consists of three sub-assemblies: the sensor with integral cables, the signal conditioning or electronics module, and a power and output cable. The electronics are completely housed in a standard DB-9 connector that also provides connection to bring +12 Vdc to +24 Vdc into the electronics and outputs for the analog voltage and switch functions. The system is CE marked and comes standard with one of two production sensors - the 9C with a measuring range of 0.025 to 0.25 inches, and the 5CM with a range of 0.01 to 0.15 inches, all based on specific target material.

The unique packaging of the KD-2440 makes incorporating the system into OEM designs easy. By simply providing the power and output circuit and a mating 9-pin D-connector on any PC board, the designer can mount the entire KD-2440 electronics using the existing DB-9 connector screws.
