The world of fluorescence microscopes requires a very stable environment in order to achieve the higest image quality. So,when The University of Utah's Biology Department published their parts list for assembly of a super-resolution Biplane FPAM 3-D microscope, they called on Kellett Enteprises.
The technique of fluorescence microscopy has become an essential tool in biology and the biomedical sciences, as well as in materials science due to attributes that are not readily available in other contrast modes with traditional optical microscopy.
As a counterpart to the recently completed system at The Jackson Laboratory, this version of a Biplane FPAM 3-D microscope from The University of Utah improves the user interface and operation through a unique adaptation of the Agilent/Till Photonics Imic microscope.
Biplane microscopy provides three-dimensional sub-100nm resolution (~30X30X75nm) of thick samples without scanning. The method employs the dual plane detection system of Biplane microscopes to achieve super-resolution in the z-axis.
However, due to vibration concerns, this system takes advantage of vibration dampening whenever possible. During assembly, the table was put on four LP-13 Shake Absorber® Vibration Isolation Pads by Kellett Enterprises.
"Vibration testing showed a near complete reduction in any transferred vibration from the surrounding environment," Dr. Brian Bennett, University of Utah, Dept. of Biology
Making lab assembly of the Biplane FPAM 3-D microscope all come together meant that isolation of vibration was critical to the performance of this instrument when completed. The specific answer for this lab was four, 5 X 5 X 3/4 inch vibration pads positioned under each leg of the vibration isolation table.
