The new MSK181 operational amplifier, along with its dual sister versions, the MSK182, MSK183, MSK184 and MSK185 are feature packed monolithic high current high voltage devices. Rated at 60 volts (+/-30 or up to 60 volts single supply operation) and 3 amps continuous output current, these op amps will swing very close to the rails, typically within a few volts. With a quiescent current of only 20 milliamps per amplifier, low power dissipation is also assured.
Protection features for this series include thermal shutdown, adjustable current limit and an Enable/Status pin for output disable control. The thermal protection circuitry will protect the amplifier from damage caused by excessive junction temperature. The output is disabled if the junction temperature reaches approximately 160 degrees C, and is then enabled once the junction temperature falls to about 140 degrees C.
User selectable current limit provided in the MSK181, 182 and 183 can be digitally controlled with a low level control signal to the I-limit pin, or can be set with a resistor. The op amp indirectly senses the load, however, so a power resistor in series with the load is not necessary, thereby further reducing system power dissipation. The Enable/Status pin can be used to either disable the output stage via a digital "low" command, or it can be used to sense whether the amplifier is in thermal shutdown.
The MSK181 is offered in a compact, hermetic, 8 pin power DIP package, with or without mounting tabs, while the MSK182 is packaged in a 14 pin hermetic DIP with tabs. Both are offered in industrial or fully compliant military versions. The MSK183 is packaged in a lower cost ceramic SIP and is offered only in an industrial temperature range version.
The MSK184 was designed to replace the obsolete Apex PA21 and is packaged in a TO3. The MSK184 is a superior device and can be dropped in to most PA21 sockets. MSK185 is currently in development and is designed to be a replacement for the obsolete Apex PA26. Minor differences in packaging exist but many customers are considering the MSK185. These amplifiers are ideal for use in applications such as servo drive and actuator drive, or as bridge amplifiers or in power supplies.
