Aspen Aerogels, a manufacturer of very high end thermal and acoustical insulation, called upon Aquest Corporation (Somers, CT), the Micro Air distributor for New England, to supply a dust collection system for a new proprietary insulation line used by the military to make helicopter engines invisible to radar and thermal heat sensing devices. Aspen plant managers had isolated the production of this product to a large room, but needed to control the dust being generated in the room to reduce health risks to their employees from the silica that made up a large part of the particulate. Upon entering the room during full production, it was snowing (for lack of a better term) silica dust. Due to the unique unrolling, heating, and re-rolling process of the production line, it was determined that multiple slotted hoods should be used to provide pinpoint capture of the particulate and minimize the amount of CFM needed.

Aquest and a local sheet metal contractor were able to reduce the amount of CFM needed to 13,000 from the 30,000-40,000 others were quoting to do the job. Once captured, the dust was transported through the hoods to a Micro Air model RP8-3 24 cartridge dust collection system equipped with Micro Air's Roto-Pulse filter cleaning system.
