These transformers are built and tested to UL 506, CSA 22.2 No.66 and IEC/EN 60 742. In addition, IEC/EN 60 204, electrical equipment of machines standard, specifies the relevant electrical requirements of machines under the IEC Machinery Directive and stipulates the mandatory use of these types of transformers for nearly all control circuits. The control transformers, STI and STZ, (single-phase transformers), as well as DTI and DTZ, (three-phase transformers) comply with the requirements specified in the above standards.

Safety aspects are becoming increasingly important in the design of installations and control systems. Transformers for producing protective isolation and a safe extra low voltage offer a simple option for ensuring the safety standard of an installation or control system. The STI, STZ, DTI, and DTZ transformers are combined isolating and safety transformers with enhanced or double insulation. They are built and tested to IEC/EN 60 742. Isolating transfomers are used when an enhanced protective measure is required between the input and output windings. THe maximum output voltage from isolating transformers is 1000 V AC. Safety transformers are isolating transformers with an output voltage of 50 V AC, or less. They are used particularly in safety extra low voltage (SELV) systems.
