The need for Inspection
DayCor® cameras detect faults related to voltage that cannot be otherwise detected with any other complementary inspection technology. The awareness of electrical engineers to corona and arcing critical effects is constantly growing and is backed up by ongoing worldwide research. Corona and arcing on transmission and distribution power lines and in substations, besides generating audio noise and radio interference, accelerate degradation of various line components, ceramic and non ceramic insulators, and are indicators of defective components that may cause outages. As a response to the growing market needs for corona and arcing detectors in various applications, Ofil offers a family of inspection solutions that cover terrain and aerial inspection and include man held, vehicle mounted and airborne options.
Conditions generating corona and arcing on porcelain insulators and bushings
- Arcing shorts between cap and pin
- Permanent internal shorts between pin and cap
- Cracked insulators
- Cracked or eroded cement where the pin enters the porcelain
- Rusted pin and socket joint
Conditions generating corona and arcing on polymer insulators and bushings
- Damaged end fitting
- Carbonized rod due to internal discharge resulting in holes and splits in the rubber
- Exposed rod due to cracked rubber
- Split insulator sheath
- Punctured holes through the sheds
- Missing or incorrectly installed, or incorrectly dimensioned corona rings
- Damaged Corona rings
- Surface tracking by pollution causing excessive leakage current
Conditions generating corona on conductors
- Broken protruding strands
- Raised single strand detached from the conducting sheath
- "Bird cage" – de-coiled conductor and damaged or distorted armor rod.
- Bird droppings and armor rod
- Nicked conductor or conductor damaged by flash over and galloping.
- Abandoned conductors
DayCor® inspection enables
- Detecting faults early in the failure cycle - save emergency and unscheduled maintenance costs
- Planning and prioritizing maintenance tasks – streamline workload and man power
- Planning and prioritizing washing cycle – save unnecessary washings costs
- Finding faults that would otherwise pass undetected until failure – save outages direct and indirect costs and maintain reputation
- Commissioning of substations and new power lines – cut constructing costs and improve reliability
- Daytime surveys – improve safety and save labor costs
- Pinpointing the exact sources of emission discharge – save time and labor costs of searching for discharge sources
- Ideal for high speed airborne inspections
DayCor® inspection prevents
- Outages
- Wrong installations of power grid and substation components
- Installations of defective components
- Consumers litigations of noise, RFI and TVI
- Risky nighttime surveys
- Unexpected higher maintenance costs
- Shorter life span of components exposed to corona
- Loss of reputation
- Litigations
