The Cantherm YGM1 PTC thermistor is designed to function as a motor protector by transmitting the temperature of the windings to a receiving device. The YGM1 exhibits an exponential increase in resistance when the target temperature is reached.

The YGM1 and all other PTC thermistors in this series are available with response temperatures from 80°C thru 180°C and are supplied with color coded wire leads. The typical wire gauge is 24AWG (0.25mm2)and the lead length is 500mm with 180mm between sensors in double or triple units.

These PTC thermistors exhibit very high sensitivity over a narrow temperature band. PTC thermistors are particularly suited as temperature sensors for monitoring the windings of electric machines, and also for use in simple fail-safe circuitry. When a given temperature (nominal response temperature)is exceeded, the circuit can be swithced off using a relay or operational amplifier, since the PTC will have an extremely high ohmic value in the area of its response temperature. This will have the same effect as a break in the circuit or a failure of the thermistor.

The PTC's resistance values for motor protection are specified in DIN 44081/44082. Resistance values below transition temperature -20 are not specified and resistance when cold is no indication of the condition of the PTC. It is ideally =between 40 - 200 ohms ut could be anywhere between 35 - 250 ohms. The greatest resistance change occurs between ±5°C either side of the target temperature, being at least 15%/K.
