Star Micronics developed the TSP800 prescription printer in March of 2004. Since then we have successfully incorporated this printer into many physicians offices, clinics and hospitals. Our biggest challenge were questions from our customers, public environments such as hospitals looking for security of the prescription paper, "How can theft of the prescription roll be addressed?"; questions from private practice physicians, "We wish to locate prescription printers in patient exam rooms. Patients would be unattended in the exam room waiting for the physician. We do not want the patient to be able to eject blank prescription forms from the printer."

Star has taken all of these suggestions into consideration and re-engineered the "STAR TSP800 Rx Printer" a fully locking thermal prescription printer. Once the paper roll is in the paper chamber and the lock is engaged, the paper can only be ejected from the printer when it is printed.

The TSP800 uses thermal technology which allows you to print any 4.375" wide prescription in less than a few seconds and requires limited consumables, the sole consumable is the secured thermal prescription paper...it does not require any maintenance: no expensive laser or ink cartridges to change, no clean up, and no waiting for the printer to warm up. Just replace the roll of paper after it has been used. Each roll contains about 500 prescriptions, with this printer you can silently print one prescription at a time, in legible print, pre-cut and ready to be signed and presented to the patient!

The advantages of this printer do not stop there. It's small foot print (7" wide and 8.5" deep), allows for the printer to stand on the counter or utilizing the optional space saving wall mount bracket and shelf mount stand for space saving vertical placement of the printer. The TSP800 uses a specific feature called "Drop-in and Print". This feature allows you to change the paper in seconds; paper loading cannot be made easier.

This printer is available with the choice of various interfaces: Parallel, USB and Ethernet, WiFi available in Q1 2006. Star Micronics has developed a new Windows/Mac OSX and Linux Drivers based on the Raster technology. These Scalable Raster Drivers provide the ability to format a page or screen image in the same way as a standard PC printer and then print that image on 112mm wide paper up to 0.15mm thick. Its unique scalable raster driver allows you to automatically reduce A4(letter size) printouts from any existing application currently using laser or inkjet printers. Now you've got yourself one serious printer!

An additional feature not to be overlooked is the TSP800 also combines the possibility to use an internal or external paper supply through an open path on the back of it, for large capacity or high security applications.
