Suffering from BUZZWORD Overload?
Green? Sustainable? Carbon Fooprint?
It's clear that there is a paradigm shift in the design community. No longer is the talk just about "First Costs," many are now talking about how to "Design for the Long-Run." The distinction is significant, but your future can be greatly enhanced if you choose to take the long view.
According to a report published by the U.S. Department of Energy, HVAC systems account for 53% of the energy consumption of a typical building. Moving beyond the buzzwords, you need products that deliver year-round savings.
What do these buzzwords mean?
- Green – a huge catch all for recycled products, energy efficient products, low impact site design, reduced emissions, day lighting, eco-friendly packaging, and countless other areas of focus. Like a LEED project, there has to be a reckoning of any number of these factors in just how "Green" a project really is.
- Sustainable Design - You can best think of this as how effective / efficient your project will be a number of years down the road. Many paraphrase this as "…sustainable is how satisfied my clients are after they have lived with the design and paid all the bills for a while." Did they have any buyer's remorse? Customers are now thinking about whether this building will be good for them and the environment for the foreseeable future.
- Carbon Footprint – The more energy required to heat, cool and ventilate, the more emissions are released. This occurs both at the source of energy generation (utility power plants still burn fossil fuels to produce the majority of electricity) and at the building in terms of flue gasses from heating. High efficiency gas heating can reduce emissions by extracting more heat from the gas than conventional efficiency products.
It is easy for HVAC manufacturers to talk green or sustainable, but where the rubber hits the road is in tangible Energy Savings, Occupant Comfort, and Indoor Air Quality.
