Worm Gear Information:

Worm Gears are right angle drives providing large speed ratios on short center distances. When properly mounted & lubricated they function as the quietest and smoothest running type of gearing. Because Worm Gears ability to achieve high ratios, maximum speed reduction can be accomplished in less space than other types of gearing.

Safety Provisions of Worm Gears:

Worm gears should not be used as a locking mechanism to hold heavy weights where reverse action can cause harm or injury. In applications where potential harm is non-existent and self-locking is desired against backward rotation then use of a single thread worm with low helix angle automatically locks the worm gear drive against backward motion.
