SCHUNK, Inc. is introducing the three-finger Dextrous Hand SDH-2. The modular gripping hand, which is driven by a servo electric motor, has seven independent degrees of freedom. It can grip and position various sized parts and objects with no change over time.

With 7 independently controlled servo motors, integrated tactile sensors, and onboard controller operating on 24 Volt DC power, the SDH-2 hand is ideal for use in mobile or service robotic applications. Generating up to 2.1Nm of torque on the proximal joints and 1.4Nm of torque on the distal joints, the hand mimics the amount of grip force that the average human hand can achieve.

The joints and links are statically and dynamically sealed to protect them from dust and moisture while special rotary feed-throughs within the fingers help to protect the wiring. The hand also offers a high degree of safety, since it has no corners or sharp edges. The speed of each joint and gripping force can be programmed for specific tasks and processes, so that no danger results during gripping. If a finger encounters an obstacle, the drives in the hand detect any resulting increase in power consumption within milliseconds and the hand responds accordingly.
