Breast Biopsy 

Breast biopsy is a surgical procedure for collecting abnormal tissue samples from the breast through one small incision.  It replaces a painful and invasive procedure.  S.S. White Flexible Shafts transmit rotary motion from the mechanical consoles to the biopsy probes.  Within the probe the Flexible Shaft drives a biopsy needle actuator that performs the collection of tissue.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides a clear view of the interior of the human body.  Vascular radiology MRI procedures often require a contrasting liquid to be injected remotely and with great precision, for the image to stand out.  A non-magnetic phosphor bronze flexible shaft transmits rotary motion from the remote driving mechanism to the injector assembly 

Corneal Flap Maker Used During LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

Flexible Shafts are used in "LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)," the most common surgical technique for correcting myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. In this procedure the outer layer of the eye, the cornea, is thinly sliced with a surgical blade powered by two S.S. White Flexible Shafts, creating a flap. One shaft powers the oscillating blade and the other shaft precisely moves the blade forward. The flap is folded down exposing the corneal stromal tissue to be sculpted by the laser for visual correction. After the laser ablation, the flap is refolded back in place. LASIK is popular because it involves little or no patient pain and the corrected visual acuity is achieved within a few hours. 

Orthopedic Surgical Instrumentation

S.S. White's Flexible Shafts are a critical part of many orthopedic surgical instruments. They allow a surgeon to easily access difficult to reach areas to tighten a screw, drill a hole, remove a nut, etc.
