Schneeberger's AMSA 3L distance measuring system has been conceived for extra long axes. "The product for all lengths" is made possible by this highly accurate combination of guidway and linear encoder.

A special design of the rail ends for butt joints, when used in combination with the AMSA 3L reading head, allows the carriage to pass over the butt joint, so that measuring axes of nearly any designed length can be constructed. To achieve a high level of availability of AMSA 3L components worldwide, each size is manufactured in 3 meter segments, and both ends of each segment are prepared for the AMSA 3L butt joint.

The product AMSA 3L has the following special features:

• The special design of AMSA 3L allows the carriage to pass over butt joints without loss of signal
• Measuring lengths up to 100 meters can be achieved
• Scale accuracy grade is 5 microns/meter, ±7 microns per butt joint
• Saves assembly time - Align the rail, and the scale is aligned too
• Saves money - No extra precision surfaces, brackets, or air purge systems are needed as with auxiliary linear encoders
• Complete interchangeability of rails, carriages and reading heads
• One reading head for all sizes
• Integral measuring-head electronics

Rail butt joint alignment and phase-in of the AMS scale takes only a couple of minutes! Schneeberger did many AMS-Long demonstrations at IMTS 2008, and invited interested parties to try it themselves.
