Spyraflo bearings are held in an outer retainer, the element that facilitates the clinching process. The retainer body is tapered, allowing it to automatically center when dropped into the hole. While supporting the underside, a steady load is applied to the flange face. The interference between the retainer and hole causes the panel material to flow into the undercut below the flange. Continued pressure is then applied as the serrated edge of the flange meets the steel panel surface. The serrations act as multiple cutting edges that increase the flow of material into the undercut.
