Austin Ribbon & Computer (ARC) and Star Micronics Help Bring Latest Technology to Major State Highway Patrol Division

Overview: Austin, Texas based, Austin Ribbon & Computer (ARC), a leading solution integrator throughout the southwest, was upgrading a solution for a large State l Police Agency (SPA). The SPA was moving forward with equipping its highway patrol troopers with a technology solution that would enable access to information, quick response to the citizens, as well as safety. As the solution was being explored, a printing solution for issuing tickets and warnings became necessary as well.

The ticket printing solution would need to achieve a simple transaction that once information had been entered into the system by a trooper, a ticket could be printed quickly and precisely, while withstanding the varying high and low temperatures the Southwest climate brings. The solution also had to provide a DC printing solution which could eliminate the inverters which were creating power issues. The solution also needed a small footprint due to limited space within the vehicle cabin. The new solution would be replacing a small laser jet printer and an AC inverter.

The Star Choice: For the ticket printing piece of the solution, ARC selected Star Micronics' TSP847 four-inch, wide-format thermal printer. A ruggedized notebook, along with the appropriate mounting equipment is used in conjunction with the Star Micronics printer. A software application allows the troopers to pull information from a violator's license and pre-populate the ticket. The ticket is then printed from the TSP847.

Due to the limitation of space and the need for all technology to be mounted, the ability to mount the printing solution was a requirement for the winning solution. The TSP847 easily fulfilled the requirement. In addition, the TSP847 is able to hold a larger paper roll (4" diameter roll), than a traditional mobile printer, making paper changes less frequent for the troopers. The TSP847 has a print speed of 50 lines per second (lps).

Feedback from the troopers on the new solution has been extremely favorable. The troopers appreciate the faster printer and the ease of use. The paper supplied has also stood up to the hot temperatures of the Southwest.

To date, over 1,100 units have been installed, with an additional 750 units planned to complete the project.
