The Mining Industry is rapidly embracing HR SmartBolts® technology in trunion wheels, which bear tremendous loads to support rotating drums containing copper ore. HR SmartBolts® provided a simple, effective, safety-enhancing and timesaving solution to a bolting problem. The instrumented bolts are capable of visually resolving a deflection of only 60 micro inches, which allows tensioning to an unprecedented precision, specified at 5%, but often as precise as 2% of fastener minimum tensile strength. This represents the highest precision available in any self-contained commercial direct-tension-indicating fastener product.
The International Bus-duct market continues to be a source of strength for the DTI SmartBolts®. Stress Indicators recently completed an order for a bus-duct manufacturer in Turkey. The company expanded their product offering to accommodate several metric sizes and customized bolts to match the higher tension indicating requirements specified by the customer. Stress Indicators has been working with the US Commercial Service's Exportech program to broaden markets for its products.
SmartBolts® inventor featured in Smithsonian Study. Mr. Chuck Popenoe, the inventor of direct tension indicating SmartBolts®, is being featured by the Lemelson Center at the Museum of American History in a study focused on Inventors and their Places of Invention. Mr. Popenoe has also been collaborating over the past two years with Maggie Dennis, a historian at the Lemelson Center, on methods to document inventors' workspaces.
