WHAT IS LTCC?
LTCC stands for Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic, and is based on a glass / ceramic composite. The device is made up of layers (green-sheets) with the required circuits printed onto the individual layers having a minimum layer thickness of 50μm (0.0018"). After printing, the different layers are stacked like a sandwich and fired in a single process. Contact can be made between layers using vias which makes the creation of inductive coils possible.
Using these techniques it is possible to produce either capacitor or inductive coil elements or a combination of both. Furthermore, as the firing temperature is below 900°C this allows the use of a silver conductor material which offers the best possible conductivity. LTCC is a low cost and high performance technique. As multiple elements are contained in a single package they offer improved performance, save assembly time and reduce required circuit dimensions and cost when compared to conventional methods of filtration.
