Low Cost Light Sensors

Low Cost Light Sensors

Low cost Light Sensors from Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions, (TAOS), Inc.

The TSL12S, TSL12T , TSL13S, TSL13T and TSL14S are cost-optimized, highly-integrated light-to-voltage optical sensors. Each combines a photodiode and transimpedance amplifier on a single monolithic integrated circuit. The photodiode active area is 0.5mm x 0.5mm and the sensors respond to light in the range of 320-1050 nm. The output voltage is linear with light intensity (irradiance) incident on the sensor.

A typical discrete optoelectronic solution usually consists of a photodiode, a transimpedance amplifier and gain setting resistors. The TSL12, TSL13 and TSL14 Light-to-Voltage Converters integrate all these components on a single die minimizing noise and saving board space. Each of the three light-to-voltage converters is designed to meet the low; middle and high range responsivity and rise time performance parameters depending upon whether high sensitivity or high speed is more important for the application. The three devices are designed to provide a different tradeoff between responsivity (sensitivity to light) and rise time (speed). The devices operate in the 3-volt to 5-volt range, require a low supply current of 1.1 milliamp typical and will operate over a temperature range of minus 25 degrees C to 85 degrees C. This device is available in either a 3-pin sidelooker package or a 4-pin low-profile surface mount (T) package.

About Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (TAOS), Inc. : Shaping the Future of Light Sensing Solutions

Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions, Incorporated (TAOS) is based in Plano, Texas (a suburb of Dallas). Established in 1998, the company mission is "To Redefine Optoelectronic Solutions to Provide Cost and Performance Advantages by Creating and Managing Technology."

Historically, applications that require the sensing of light stimulus to execute a function have been implemented by either a photodiode or phototransistor – neither of which support the emerging needs for higher performance optical sensor-based applications.

Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, our semiconductor devices combine precision mixed-signal functionality with photo-detectors on the same integrated circuit to produce products with performance and cost advantages over conventional solutions. TAOS's intelligent opto sensors simplify the measurement and analog-to-digital conversion of light, and are designed to reduce the need for signal conditioning or pre-processing circuitry in light-centric systems. Our light sensing solutions improve system performance and reduce design-cycle time giving designers the flexibility and performance they require at an attractive system cost.
