The M&P Lab specializes in material qualification and failure analysis on a range of materials used in the construction industry. A host of comprehensive laboratory testing services provides a one-stop-shop for material investigations of cement, concrete, aggregates, asphalts, mortars, stone, and steel.
CAPABILITIES
Chemical Testing: A variety of chemical tests are performed to verify elemental composition and investigate chemical properties. The M&P lab has a complete in-house chemical laboratory including wet chemistry and advanced instruments to measure trace concentrations of chemical elements, which can be important to verify a material's composition or to determine the presence of a contaminant. Among the techniques used are X-ray fluorescence (XRF), ion chromatography (IC), and inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (OES-ICP).
Physical Testing: Mechanical tests are used to verify certain physical characteristics of various materials. At The M&P Lab, a complete mechanical lab can provide compressive or flexural strength of concrete cores, or tensile properties of rebar. An in-house machine shop is available to rapidly produce mechanical test specimens for more detailed characterization of metals.
Petrographic Examinations: One of the important diagnostic tools used in troubleshooting issues with concrete and other construction materials is petrography. It involves examination of the microstructure under high magnification, using a light microscope and possibly a scanning electron microscope. Used in conjunction with other chemical or physical tests, The M&P Lab can conduct petrographic examinations to reveal critical information to assess the quality and durability of the material.
Weld Evaluations: The metallurgists at M&P Lab are widely recognized for their thorough knowledge of welding, joining, and heat-treatment processes. They can provide critical insight to assess the integrity of the welds, ensure compliance with specifications, or identify the cause of a weld failure.
Corrosion Testing: One of the key tests to assess the degree of corrosion of reinforced concrete structures is the half-cell potential method, in which the electrical potentials of the reinforcing steel are measured throughout the structure. The M&P Lab can conduct these surveys, producing a map indicating areas of probable corrosion activity. This map is useful to pinpoint locations for additional more definitive tests, such as drilling cores for chemical testing or petrographic exams.
