Failure analysis involves a systematic examination of evidence to determine the cause of failure and prevent it from recurring. It requires a disciplined and methodical approach, combined with an understanding of materials science and engineering in order to interpret the story told by the failed material.

The M&P Lab has the expertise, technology, and experience to identify complex failure modes in a wide range of parts, products, and materials. We offer complete physical and chemical analysis capabilities for both metallic and non-metallic materials. For metals, the testing services are augmented by extensive metallography and metallurgical evaluation capabilities, which, when combined with fractography using a scanning electron microscope, can further unlock important clues in the investigation. Expert investigative skills combined with complete testing and imaging analysis techniques can quickly help determine cause of failure. By first examining the apparent symptoms, a detailed analysis reveals the problem. Once this discovery is made, sophisticated analytical techniques are employed to prove the source of the problem. Often, this is a comparison to a known – the unknown alloy vs. what it is supposed to be, a density compared to the known "good" material's density, or a composition compared to known standards.
