Steam Driven Vapor Absorption Chiller-Image

Absorption chillers use low grade energy instead of electricity to generate refrigeration. Steam driven absorption chillers utilize saturated steam as the energy source, recovering waste energy to provide air conditioning and process cooling. The coolant is nothing more than water so there are no harmful emissions to the atmosphere. Thermax chillers are saving electricity and providing environmentally-friendly cooling at thousands of hospitals, casinos, shopping malls, dairies, museums, refineries, government facilities and other facilities. These chillers provide many years of reliable operation with minimal maintenance and generate very attractive savings and short payback periods in many applications.

Thermax steam-driven Vapor Absorption Machines are available in single-effect and double-effect modes. The source of heat is saturated steam at pressures in the range of 0.5-10 Kg/cm²(g) [7-140psig].

Single Effect Steam Driven Machine

In the single effect machine, one "generator" is used to recover heat from the low pressure saturated steam.

Operating Range

  • Capacities: From 50 to 2000 Tons Refrigeration
  • Steam pressure: 0.6-3.5 Kg/cm² (g) [8.5-50psig]
  • Chilled water temperature: As low as 3.5ºC (0ºC for brine)
  • Heat source: Steam

Double Effect Steam Driven Machine

In the double effect machine, two "generators" are used to recover heat from the saturated steam. The primary generator, referred to as the High Temperature Generator (HTG) produces vapor, whose latent heat is used to fire a secondary generator, referred to as the Low Temperature Generator (LTG). This option provides very efficient waste heat recovery when saturated steam pressure is above 4kg/cm²(g) [55psig]

  • Capacities: From 51 to 2000 Tons Refrigeration
  • Steam pressure: 4.0-10.0 Kg/cm² (g) [55-140psig]
  • Chilled water temperature: As low as 3.5ºC (0ºC for brine)
  • Heat source: Steam
