The purpose
of this two-day workshop is to increase your awareness of the safety issues
involved with selecting laminate materials and other components for use in the
construction of a printed wiring board (PWB). A series of lectures and
classroom exercises have been designed to enhance your skills in selecting
materials for specific end-product applications.
The knowledge
you will gain from this workshop, will help you make better, more informed
decisions regarding the selection of laminates and other board components and
help you move from the design stage to production as quickly as possible. We
will also outline the requirements that a PWB must meet when used in an end-product
application, including the use of coating on the board. Breakout sessions on
the second day will address issues unique to board fabricators and laminators.
Workshop topics:
Pre-selection testing for laminate materials
Long Term Thermal Aging of laminates
General PWB Construction Requirements
Single-layer PWBs
Multi-layer PWBs
Metal-clad (MCIL / CCIL) base material program
Metal-based and High-Density Interconnect (HDI) boards
Flexible PWBs
Coatings used on PWBs
Objectives:
Identify and describe the flammability, resistance to
ignition, electrical and mechanical tests (UL 94, UL 746A and UL 746E) and
the ratings and requirements for each
Define the long term thermal aging program and how it
differs from maximum operating temperature (MOT)
Describe the general requirements for PWB construction
Describe the requirements for single-layer and
multi-layer boards
Discuss the MCIL/CCIL programs
Identify the requirements for metal-based boards and
high-density interconnect (HDI) boards
Describe the differences between rigid and flexible
boards in terms of construction and performance requirements
Apply the concepts discussed in this course with real
world simulations
Describe the end-use requirements for a PWB including
MOT, spacings, use of coatings and the traceability program
Define the best practices which will help reduce
turnaround time and help eliminate FUS issues
