The purpose of this two-day workshop is to increase your awareness of the safety issues involved with selecting plastic materials for use in electronic and electrical products. A series of lectures and classroom exercises have been designed to enhance your skills in selecting materials for specific product applications. The knowledge you gain from this workshop will help you make better, more informed decisions regarding the selection of plastics, and help you move from the design stage to production as quickly as possible.

Workshop topics:

  • Flammability classification
  • Resistance to ignition
  • Electrical, mechanical and thermal properties
  • Electrical insulation
  • Thermal considerations
  • Material substitution
  • Fabricated parts
  • Special applications

Objectives:

  • Identify and describe the flammability tests, ignition tests, electrical tests, mechanical tests, thermal tests (UL 94; UL 746A-C) and the ratings and requirements for each
  • Discuss the molder's program works: material traceability and modifications (UL 746D)
  • Define the differences between IEC and UL with regard to plastics
  • Apply the concepts discussed in this course with real world simulations
  • Determine applicable requirements and select appropriate materials
