VICTREX® PEEK™ Polymer the Solution as Emissions Regulations Drive Transmission Technology

As in other parts of the world, significant challenges to improve vehicle CO2 emissions have been set by the European Union (EU) and other European national governments. These regulations mean that high CO2 emission vehicles will be increasingly penalized by taxation, and high fuel cost limiting their market success. Transmission manufacturers are challenged to deliver the same level of performance with smaller engines integrating numerous functionalities including start stop micro-hybrid systems while meeting consumer demand for improved performance and reduced fuel consumption.

With a long history of success in applications like seal rings, thrust washers and thrust bearings, bearing cages and check valves, Victrex can help transmission manufacturers meet these challenges. Victrex set the benchmark years ago with VICTREX PEEK 450FC30, a modified VICTREX PEEK Compound with 10% each of carbon fibers, graphite and PTFE. It is used successfully in seal rings and thrust washers in a wide range of transmissions around the globe. The primary benefit of this compound is its very good dry running properties - even without oil lubrication.

With continuously increasing requirements customers are looking for enhanced performance of sealing rings and bearings. In situations where VICTREX PEEK standard materials are limited, Victrex can still offer a solution with its VICTREX® T-Series™ providing excellent wear properties in dry and lubricated environments under harsh conditions. Offering the cost-effectiveness of a melt processable polymer combined with the advantage of high weld-line strength, VICTREX T-Series polymer is an excellent solution for applications requiring superior high temperature resistance, unparalleled compression strength, excellent tensile and flexural strength and good fatigue properties.
