Chip Resistant, Eco-friendly VICOTE® Coatings Provide Higher Performance and Higher Energy-Efficiency Than Porcelain/Vitreous Enamel

Processing porcelain/vitreous enamel requires an extremely high temperature range, typically 800°C (1470°F) compared to 400°C (752°F) for VICOTE coatings, based on VICTREX® PEEK™ polymer. Apart from the high cost of processing at elevated temperatures, one of the main drawbacks of porcelain/vitreous enamel is its poor chip resistance which can lead to high reject rates during production. Unlike parts coated with VICOTE coating, recovery of enamel coated parts manufactured for the food processing, industrial and domestic ovens, hair appliances, heat exchanger pipes and vessels, flu gas ducting, sanitary ware and street signs – is not feasible since porcelain/vitreous enamel is bonded to metal and creates an inseparable compound.

While porcelain enamels have excellent temperature, chemical, wear and abrasion resistance, porcelain/vitreous enamels have poor chip resistance, are brittle and have low ductility when applied as a coating onto steel. This poor chip resistance results in production problems and can lead to a high reject rate. Although the raw material costs for porcelain enamel are low when compared to VICOTE coatings, porcelain/vitreous enamels have a higher processing cost due to the increased energy costs associated with operating the high temperature ovens.

Porcelain/vitreous enamel can be applied by, electrostatic, wet spray and by dipping, using similar equipment as used with organic coatings. Since VICOTE coatings can also be applied by these methods, manufacturers can use the same equipment to significantly reduce energy costs and lower the cost of processing by replacing porcelain/vitreous enamel with VICOTE coatings while benefiting from overall higher performance.

Benefits of VICOTE Coatings Compared to Porcelain/Vitreous Enamels:

  • Excellent resistance to hot water and steam
  • Excellent ductility and chip resistance
  • Lower processing cost due to significantly lower oven operating temperatures
  • Quieter performance in operation
  • Part recovery
