VICOTE - VICTREX® PEEK™ Coating Technology for Coating of Molds Outperforms Fluoropolymer Coatings by up to 30 times

VICOTE® Coatings, liquid dispersions, based on VICTREX® PEEK™ polymer offer exceptional scratch and wear resistance, high temperature performance, strength, and durability.

Unlike traditional mold coating materials like silicones, Fluoropolymers, waxes, inorganic coatings, and other solvent based systems that have a number of disadvantages, including; poor wear and abrasion resistance, durability, cost, poor release properties, and environmental issues, VICOTE Coatings are an excellent choice for the coating of mold tools in a wide range of applications like tire, shoe and industrial baking molds. With a combination of very good release properties and wear resistance, especially at elevated temperatures, VICOTE Coatings satisfy the key performance requirements of mold applications and have been shown to outperform traditional Fluoropolymers. For example, in a coated shoe mold application, VICOTE Coatings lasted over thirty times longer than the same mold coated with PTFE. In a golf ball core mold the excellent scratch and wear resistance of VICOTE Coatings outperformed Fluoropolymers and extended service life of the application by up to 6 times – from 1 month to 6 months, thereby increasing the mold uptime.

Sung Hyoung Precision Adopts High Temperature Performance VICTREX VICOTE® Coatings for Golf Ball Core Mold

Sung Hyoung Precision, a leading system provider of technological innovation for golf ball core molds, was interested in extending the service life of the core mold and helping golf ball manufacturers extend the system replacement cycle and reduce its cost significantly. They chose VICOTE® Coatings, liquid dispersions, based on VICTREX® PEEK™ polymer as the coating solution for their golf ball core mold.

Fluoropolymers and metal plating materials have been the material of choice for mold coating applications however, Sung Hyoung Precision chose VICOTE Coatings for its excellent scratch and wear resistance enabling them to extend the service life of the core mold up to 6 times – from 1 month to 6 months.

Unlike the conventional fluoropolymers, the one-coat VICOTE Coatings system eliminates the need for primer and provides a thin single coating layer with excellent wear resistance and release performance, reducing the need for frequent coating maintenance and logistics costs helping golf ball manufacturers extend the system replacement cycle significantly.

Benefits of VICOTE Coatings for Golf Ball Core Mold:

  • Extend the service life of the core mold
  • Reduce system replacement cost
  • Extend system replacement cycle
  • Eliminate need for primer
  • Provide a thin single coating layer with excellent wear resistance and release performance
  • Reduce the need for frequent coating maintenance and logistics costs

High Performance VICOTE Coating

Eco-friendly VICOTE High Performance Coatings were developed to fill the performance gap found in many existing coating technologies today. Whether applied to industrial, automotive, food processing, semiconductor, electronics or pharmaceutical parts, VICOTE Coatings are a great choice for engineers looking to improve the wear performance and life of the coated part in their industrial coating applications.

VICOTE 700 Series powders are used for electrostatic coating. The grade required will depend on the film thickness required and/or the temperature requirements.

VICOTE 800 Series aqueous-based liquid dispersions are available where thinner coatings are required, where difficult geometries must be coated, and in instances where enhanced properties such as release are required.

Electrostatic Dissipative (ESD) grades, available as part of the range of VICOTE Coatings, can effectively help control the rate of electrostatic charge build-up, which is of particular importance in hazardous-area industrial applications, as well as the manufacture of sensitive electrical and semiconductor equipment.
