Belting - VICOTE PEEK Coating Technology

Belting - VICOTE PEEK Coating Technology

VICOTE® Coatings – VICTREX® PEEK Coating Technology for the Glass Fibre and Fabric Belting Supplier Industries.

VICOTE® Coatings, liquid dispersions, based on VICTREX® PEEK polymer offer exceptional scratch and wear resistance, high temperature performance, strength and durability.

Belts coated with VICOTE Coatings can increase wear and abrasion resistance, improve cut-through resistance, increase puncture and impact resistance and case studies show an increase in the belt's life by up to 40% reducing both downtime and maintenance cost for the belt manufacturer's customers.

The relevant markets are food processing, wood pulp processing, rubber processing, clothing production and carpet carrying belts where durability and long life as well as "release" properties of the coated belts are all important end use requirements.

VICOTE Coatings a Fit for Textile Fuse Pressing Belts

In the textile fusing process, when fusing two or more fabric layers together to form the reinforced panel for collars, cuffs, or any other product requiring a certain amount of rigidity or stiff construction, it is vital that the carrier belt has the following characteristics:

  • Temperature resistance to 260°C (500°F)
  • Excellent release
  • Semi-conductive
  • Non-marking top surface
  • Chemically inert
  • Easy cleaning

While standard antistatic PTFE coated products offer these properties, VICOTE Coatings can greatly enhance them. The result, a product range far superior to other PTFE coated belts. Advantages include:

  • Increased scratch resistance (up to 38%)
  • Exceptional Abrasion Resistance – very hard, tough, and scratch resistant (up to 20%)
  • No rub-off
  • lmproved anti-static properties
  • lncreased adhesion of PTFE to glass
  • Better around narrow diameter rollers
  • Greater dimensional stability

These advantages translate into benefits for end use customers, including, longer life belts with improved durability, reduced downtime and maintenance cost.

Benefits of VICOTE Coatings for Textile Fuse Pressing Belts

  • Longer belt life (40% increase)
  • Increased efficiency
  • Less downtime
  • Improved finished product
  • Easier to clean and maintain
  • Elimination of PTFE migration

Benefit of VICOTE Coatings for Textile Machinery Components

  • High Temperature performance, continuous use temperature up to 260ºC (500ºF)
  • Excellent Mechanical Properties, including wear, creep and cut through resistance. Extremely durable at high temperatures.
  • Provide higher performance and longer life
  • Reduce overall systems cost, less frequent part replacement, higher operating efficiencies, longer life and more efficient design versus machined parts
  • Very Good Chemical Resistance, can withstand exposure to heat, water, steam and/or chemicals in demanding textile manufacturing process
  • Ease of Processing, increased design flexibility

Taconic International selects VICOTE® Coatings For Demanding Food Cooking and Processing Belt Application

Taconic International, pioneered the manufacture of PTFE coated woven glass fibre fabrics and other high-temperature/non-stick materials and is a leading supplier to the food processing industry. They needed a better performing belt with improved resistance to grease and oils, and enhanced wear and abrasion properties to increase conveyer belt life, to reduce both downtime and maintenance costs for their customers. By incorporating VICOTE Coatings dispersions as a key element in the new Tacmaster product range for food processing conveyor belts they were able to increase the belt's life by up to 40% satisfying their customers demand for reduced downtime and maintenance costs.

Taconic uses VICOTE Coatings in its range of Tacmaster food processing belts that are produced in master rolls and converted to required conveyor belt dimensions. These specially coated conveyor belts are used in aggressive food cooking environments where excellent wear, release and mechanical properties, and excellent temperature performance are required, such as in the pre-cooking of bacon, chicken, burgers, tortilla, pizza crusts and eggs.

Taconic found that by adding VICOTE Coatings dispersions to their existing Fluoropolymer system and coating and curing the woven glass fibre belts with the resulting mixture translated into a belting product that offers an improved service life for the food processing industry of at least four times that of the standard belt.

"By using VICOTE Coatings dispersions in our new food conveyor belts, we are able to provide our customers around the world, with increased wear and abrasion resistance, improved cut-through resistance, increased puncture and impact resistance as well as non-stick properties," said Ian Molyneux, General Manager, IPD Europe, Taconic Industrial Products Division.

Working with Victrex, Taconic created a new customized coating system based on VICOTE Coatings providing a unique combination of performance properties including wear and abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance for exposure to oils and grease, high temperature performance, continuous temperature resistance up to 260°C (500°F), and revolutionize the way food belts are manufactured.

Benefits of VICOTE Coatings for Food & Beverage Processing

  • Exceptional Abrasion Resistance - very hard, tough, and scratch resistant
  • Excellent Wear Surface – an excellent wear counterface to hard surfaces like steel and ceramics. Non-galling with low particulation and nonsloughing
  • High Temperature performance – one of the highest performing polymers available where continuous high temperature performance up to 260°C (500°F) is required, withstands lead-free soldering temperatures VICOTE 708, 709, F813 Blk and F814 grades are based on VICTREX PEEK-HT for even higher temperature performance up to 280ºC (550ºF) and enhanced mechanical properties
  • Excellent Mechanical Properties – including wear, creep and cut through resistance, extremely durable at high temperatures
  • Very Good Chemical Resistance – insoluble in all common solvents, excellent resistance to acids, bases, hydrocarbons, salts and steam
  • FDA Compliance – the majority of VICOTE grades can be used in environments involving food contact
  • Eco-Friendly – majority of dispersion grades are aqueous (water) based and are formulated to contain some of the industry's lowest levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Ease of Processing – process temperatures between 380°C to 420°C (716°F to 788°F). Increased design flexibility, can lead to cost savings versus machined parts

High Performance Coating

Eco-friendly VICOTE High Performance Coatings were developed to fill the performance gap found in many existing coating technologies today. Whether applied to industrial, automotive, food processing, semiconductor, electronics or pharmaceutical parts, VICOTE Coatings are a great choice for engineers looking to improve the wear performance and life of the coated part in their industrial coating applications.

VICOTE 700 Series powders are used for electrostatic coating. The grade required will depend on the film thickness required and/or the temperature requirements.

VICOTE 800 Series aqueous-based liquid dispersions are available where thinner coatings are required, where difficult geometries must be coated, and in instances where enhanced properties such as release are required.

Electrostatic Dissipative (ESD) grades, available as part of the range of VICOTE Coatings, can effectively help control the rate of electrostatic charge build-up, which is of particular importance in hazardous-area industrial applications, as well as the manufacture of sensitive electrical and semiconductor equipment.

Ease of VICOTE Coatings Liquid Dispersion Coating processing for your Industrial Coating Application
VICOTE High Performance Coatings can be applied using electrostatic or conventional dispersion spray techniques, including thermal spraying.

The main ingredient of VICOTE Coatings is VICTREX® PEEK™ polymer, a linear, aromatic, semi-crystalline thermoplastic, widely regarded as one of the highest performing thermoplastic materials in the world. It offers a unique combination of properties to help processors and end-users reach new levels of cost savings, performance, and product differentiation.
