GW Instek SFG-830 Arbitrary Waveform Generator
The Instek SFG-830 is a Direct Digital Synthesis design using DDS technology to generate stable output frequency waveforms with extraordinary resolution.
Traditional frequency synthesized function generators typically are designed using Phase Locked Loop (PLL) technology which utilize a dynamic loop filter resulting in problems such as poor phase jitter and frequency switching response.
PLL designs require a wave -shaping circuit with an address counter that is controlled by a variable frequency clock. The counter addresses memory locations in a waveform RAM where the RAM output is then converted by a high speed digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to produce an analog output signal. Problems such as poor phase jitter and lack of proper transient response arise here as well.
DDS designs avoid the problems by using a variable speed clock frequency and a 32 bit high speed DAC.

SFG-2000 series DDS Function Generators
DDS series frequency synthesizer Function Generators consists of a Phase Accumulator, a lookup (ROM or RAM) waveform table, a high-speed Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), and a Low Pass Filter (LPF). The phase accumulator accumulates K by adding K with its output for every clock cycle. The output of
the accumulator is used to position the data in the ROM-RAM Table. The DAC converts the digital data into an analog waveform with step-shape generated from the digital data. The following LPF smoothes the step shape by filtering out the clock frequency to form a very pure sine wave.
