In the food processing industry, a typical in-plant cleaning system operates continuously to maintain system pressure whether cleaning is occurring or not. During the food processing shifts, only 25% of the flow output of the system is required. That equates to 75% wasted energy. The only time 100% of the flow is required is during the complete plant cleaning and preparation phase. Not only is the plant wasting energy to maintain system pressure, it is also decreasing supply pump life and increasing downtime.Adding Hydra-Cell pumps to the current system can save tens of thousands of dollars per year.
Using Hydra-Cell pumps enables 100% turndown, which means the pumps can maintain line pressure at zero flow. This is a significant improvement over most systems that run supply pumps at full flow and pressure in a continuous by-pass loop. The Hydra-Cell pumps, when added to the existing system, can be operated at the torque required to maintain the "set condition". When the individual cleaning stations are operated on and off, the drive signals the Hydra-Cell pumps to maintain torque, which relates to system pressure, speeding them up or slowing them down as necessary. The Hydra-Cell pumps are seal-less and can run dry indefinitely without damage.
This minor addition to the original configuration results in a new system that requires significantly less energy to power the motor. For example, in a recent redesign when zero flow was required and the system was just maintaining system power, the energy consumption was roughly equivalent to the amount of energy used to power a 100 watt light bulb. It also resulted in an 84% reduction in energy consumption that saved the customer over $24,000 per year.
