Vacuum Lifting Solutions for Handling Fiber Board

Product Announcement from Wood's Powr-Grip Co., Inc.

Vacuum Lifting Solutions for Handling Fiber Board-Image

Hunter Douglas, a world leader in window coverings and a major manufacturer of architectural products was in need of a solution to assist them with the challenge of lifting heavy, low-density fiber board onto a cutting table. The current process of lifting the heavy fiber board was slow and awkward, causing an increase in product damage, loss of productivity and compromised worker safety. A vacuum lifter would address the challenges of the current process, but the porosity of the fiber board posed a unique challenge to the use of a vacuum lifting system.

Wood's Powr-Grip worked with Hunter Douglas to devise a solution by modifying Powr-Grip's standard FLEXR6HV11AC vacuum lifter. This lifter was ideal due to the movable arms and movable vacuum pads which would easily accommodate the different sizes of fiber board. Model HV11 vacuum pads, standard on the FLEXR6, were fitted with closed cell foam rings and slightly modified to optimize the amount of vacuum generated at the board surface. Powr-Grip engineers also employed a 120 SCFM [3390 liters per minute] vacuum pump, remote from the vacuum lifter, to generate the needed vacuum to safely lift the fiber board.

The vacuum lifter was also equipped with extended, dual position handles, to facilitate operator control with both large and small materials. To enable the operator to place the vacuum lifter in the center of the load quickly and accurately, metal stops were positioned at the front of the lift frame, and a metal positioning guide was attached to the pad frame arm at the side. Hunter Douglas has been utilizing the custom lifter since last August and is very pleased with the results.

At Wood's Powr-Grip we offer standard models to meet almost every need for ease of use, reliability and safety. However, if one of our existing models doesn't match your exact requirements, we are able to design and manufacture completely new products, or modify an existing design, to address your application. The result is a custom vacuum lifter?made to fulfill your job requirements, at the lowest possible cost. For more information contact a Technical Sales Representative at 800-548-7341 or visit
