Sewage and waste process flows often contain solids of varying size and texture which may cause even "non-clog" pumps to clog or bind. The Chicago VTX Vortex Pump is a solution to this problem, which is common to both municipal and industrial applications. The inherent characteristics of the VTX Vortex Pump, with its multi-vaned recessed impeller, permits it to pump these materials without clogging.

The multi-vaned impeller, which is recessed and completely removed from the volute area, sets the fluid into a whirling, or circular motion which extends into the suction opening. The resulting vortex action directs the incoming flow of both the fluid and entrained solids into the volute area where they are forced out by action of centrifugal force. Since the impeller is completely recessed from the volute area, there is no restriction between the impeller and fluid to impede the mass of fluid in the volute and, as a result, the solids do not enter the impeller. The end result is a truly "non-clog" pump.
